“Painting a Picture with Sound”
Duke University’s Center for Documentary Study
A 9 week, online course in which students each produce a 6 to 8 minute, documentary-style radio feature. Through virtual group meetings, individual assignments and instruction, and an interactive website, students learn the art of documentary-style production. Students are encouraged to incorporate a range of audio elements into their pieces including narration, interviews, music, archival footage, performance, scenes, ambiences and effects. The course takes students through the steps of finding a topic, writing a pitch, pre-interviewing subjects, pre-producing locations, recording, logging, editing and mixing.
