Program Summary: There are tens of thousands of inmates living in total isolation in America’s jails and prisons today. And the number is rapidly growing. Often prisoners spend years – even decades – by themselves in cells the size of a small bathroom. They don’t see anyone. They don’t talk to anyone. Sensory deprivation, such as that experienced in solitary confinement, drives people insane. U.N. conventions and treaties define this sort of treatment as torture. If we, as a people, continue to brutalize others in this fashion, what does that do to us all as a society?

New Routes to Community Health: Executive Producer

Program Summary: New Routes to Community Health is a new approach for improving the health of immigrants through immigrant-created media. Eight diverse immigrant-led collaborations across the United States have received three-year grants from New Routes to create locally-focused media and outreach campaigns that speak directly to immigrants’ health concerns.

Program Summary: Aviation High is located on the grounds of Oakland California’s airport. The school puts “at risk” kids on an academic track while also teaching concrete skills in aviation maintenance and business. This webstory shows the teens at Aviation High learning physics, math and poetry through hand-on projects that all relate to flight. The students are smart, funny, motivated … and great break dancers!
